Members of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Board of Governors have jointly condemned a recent Russian drone strike on a spent nuclear fuel storage facility near the defunct Chornobyl NPP, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on June 10.

“Today, 47 states and the EU at the IAEA Board of Governors condemned Russia’s attack against Ukraine’s Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility near Chornobyl NPP,” Sybiha said in a Twitter post.

“The message is clear: Russia continues to undermine nuclear safety and security through its illegal war against Ukraine. I thank our partners for their unwavering support. Now it is time to take action to stop Russia’s nuclear blackmail.”

He said increased pressure on Russia is the only way to stop regular strikes on Ukrainian civilians and critical nuclear infrastructure. He also reiterated the need to end the occupation of Ukraine’s largest nuclear facility and return control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to its lawful owner.
