International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi is broadly in favor of Ukraine’s current plans to add more reactors to the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant (KhNPP), according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In his Feb. 4 evening address, Zelenskyy reported he discussed this long-term project and the broader issue of Ukraine’s nuclear power generation during a meeting with Grossi.

“The completion of the project is essential for Ukraine's energy independence and the region's stability,” said the president.

“It is crucial for the Ukrainian parliament to support this initiative.”

In turn, Grossi stated that the IAEA considers the decision to complete the two unfinished KhNPP reactors to be an internal Ukrainian matter. He noted that the agency's mission is to uphold safety standards at nuclear plants.

“We consider it the sovereign right of each country to decide on energy sector projects. In Ukraine's case, this appears to be a wise decision, as nuclear energy has remained an economic backbone even in challenging times,” Grossi told reporters in Kyiv during his visit on Feb. 4.
