An unidentified drone exploded near the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) on Aug. 18, killing one plant worker and injuring 15, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said.

“The IAEA has been informed that a drone exploded at a bus stop used by staff travelling to the Zaporizhzhia NPP at around 06:00 today,” the agency said in a Twitter post.

“The ZNPP Director informed the IAEA team that the explosion caused 16 casualties among staff and subcontractors, including one death and three serious injuries, describing it as the worst event the plant has faced.”

The agency specified that “no nuclear safety or security damage was reported.”

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi urged military commanders to stop attacks on nuclear facilities and their personnel.

“I call on the military commanders responsible for these actions, as well as everyone else who strikes nuclear power plants and/or their personnel, to immediately stop these unacceptable actions, which are entirely contrary to all principles and pose major risks to nuclear and physical safety during conflict,” he said.
