Russian forces became more likely to execute Ukrainian POWs after November 2023, war crimes investigator at Ukraine’s Prosecutor General's Office, Yuriy Belousov, told public broadcaster Suspilne on Feb. 27.

Belousov stated that most of the executions were recorded in the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts, which he believes indicate "changes in Russian policy." He suggested that the executions of Ukrainian POWs could be ordered by the Russian military leadership.

"Such cases cannot be so numerous by mere chance," said Belousov.

Belousov added that although the Prosecutor General's Office is currently aware of 45 executed POWs, the actual number could be significantly higher.

"In recent months, we have seen an increase in the number of deliberate executions of our Ukrainian prisoners of war," he said.

“This is an attempt to terrify the Ukrainians so that they do not resist, and it fits into Russia’s overall policy to subjugate the Ukrainian people.”
