Schäfer says the United States and Israel aim to topple the Iranian terrorist regime, a development he says should bring joy to millions of Iranians who have suffered under dictatorship and torture for decades. Still, many politicians, including some in Germany, are displeased and call the strikes a violation of international law.
“This assessment is formally correct,” the article said.
“However, it doesn't make the world a better place one bit. On the contrary: In its current interpretation, international law also protects despots and murderers. Since the beginning of the year alone, the mullahs in Iran have killed tens of thousands of citizens. Consequences for the perpetrators under international law? None!”
Schäfer adds that the bitter truth for those who defend democracy and international law is that “what is needed is not an excess of morality, but rather an excess of military power.”
“Because dictators and terrorists (unfortunately) have no interest in well-intentioned legal clauses,” he concludes.
“They care nothing for international law, only for the law of the jungle.”
On March 4, an independent UN commission said the U.S.–Israeli operation against Iran contravenes the UN Charter.
