Trump had written on Truth Social that “the new president” of Iran reached out to the United States asking for a ceasefire.
“Iran’s New Regime President, much less Radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE!” the U.S. leader said earlier the same day.
On March 24, Israeli news site Ynet reported that new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei had agreed to talks with the United States. Tehran had previously denied any direct negotiations and its foreign ministry dismissed reports of a "productive dialogue" as untrue.
On March 25, The New York Times, citing diplomatic sources, reported that the United States had sent Iran a 15-point plan via Pakistan seeking to end the war in the Middle East. Officials said the plan addressed Iran's ballistic missile and nuclear programs.
On March 31, Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi,
said Tehran and Washington were exchanging messages directly and through
intermediaries but stated that the exchanges did not amount to formal
negotiations.
