Tehran is seeking guarantees from China before proceeding with a deal with the U.S. to end the war, the news outlet stated.
The New York Times, citing three Iranian officials, reported on May 24 that the issue of enriched uranium is expected to be negotiated with the United States within the next 30 to 60 days.
Two U.S. officials told the news agency that the potential deal will require Iran to dispose of its existing stockpile of highly enriched uranium. However, the mechanism by which Tehran would dispose of these stockpiles is still being discussed.
Russia earlier offered to accept Iranian enriched uranium for storage or reprocessing. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin discussed the idea with Chinese leader Xi Jinping at a meeting in Beijing on May 20.
Putin also tried to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump of the proposal, but Trump refused, Axios reported. A U.S. official said Washington’s position is that it requires reliable control over the uranium.
