Under the War Powers Resolution of 1973, a president may conduct hostilities for 60 days; after that, he must stop them and either seek congressional authorization or request a 30-day extension in the case of an unavoidable military necessity while withdrawing forces.
The U.S. and Israeli campaign against Iran began Feb. 28, and Trump officially notified Congress of the operation 48 hours after the first airstrikes, starting the 60-day clock.
Politico reported that the prolonged conflict with Iran has
raised the prospect that Trump could lose support from Republicans in Congress.
Axios noted that by declaring the operations over, Trump effectively resets the
clock and could make it harder for Congress to challenge his authority or to
limit future actions.
