He claimed that the EU made “some kind of attempts” to establish contact with Russia.
When asked whether Russia is ready to negotiate with Brussels, Ushakov answered positively.
Ukraine-Russia peace talks
On May 7, the Kremlin said it considered three-way talks involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia inappropriate until Ukraine withdrew its troops from the part of Donbas it controls. Zelenskyy has repeatedly said Ukraine would never do so.
Ukrainian President published an open letter to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on June 4 calling for an end to the war “in a format between you and us” and proposing a face-to-face meeting. Zelenskyy also said he was ready to freeze the front line.
Putin declined the invitation to meet.
Bloomberg, citing sources, reported on June 17 that European Council President Antonio Costa established contact with Kremlin officials to try and engage Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine.
Costa’s chief adviser held two phone calls with a senior Russian official close to Putin.
