Moscow calls for renewed peace talks after deadly Kyiv strike

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the “peace process is currently on pause.”

“We expect that it will nevertheless resume,” Peskov said, commenting on U.S. President Donald Trump saying that Russia’s recent strike on Kyiv could undermine efforts to reach a peace settlement in the war against Ukraine.

Peskov also expressed hope that the United States would “continue its mediation efforts.”

At the same time, the Kremlin spokesman again falsely claimed that Russia strikes “only military and military-adjacent targets.”

On May 15, Trump said a Russian missile strike on a residential building in Kyiv that killed 24 people, including three children, could damage peace efforts.

Trump said he had discussed the war in Ukraine with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and that both leaders agreed they wanted the fighting to end.

“We would like to see this issue resolved. Until last night, everything looked good, but last night they (the Ukrainians) suffered a major strike. So it will happen (the end of the war). But it’s a shame,” Trump said, referring to the Russian attack on Kyiv, according to Reuters.

Russia launched a massive overnight and morning attack on Kyiv on May 14 using cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and Shahed drones. Damage was recorded in the Holosiivskyi, Dniprovskyi, Obolonskyi, Solomianskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts.

In the Darnytskyi district, a section of a residential building collapsed after being struck by an Kh-101 missile.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 24 people were killed and 57 injured in the large-scale overnight attack on the capital.

Friday, May 15, was declared a day of mourning in the city.
