A Kyiv resident attempting to cross illegally into Romania through a mountainous area outside official checkpoints was stopped after an unexpected encounter with wildlife, Ukraine’s border guard service said on May 30.
During the nighttime trek, the would-be traveler unexpectedly encountered a female bear. To avoid danger, the man climbed a tree and called for help.
Border guards from the Mukachevo detachment responded to the call. By the time they arrived, the animal had already left the area.
The man was safely helped down from the tree, taken to a border guard unit and issued an administrative citation.
