Kyiv Oblast tightens gas station security after deadly Russian strikes

He announced the meeting in a Telegram post on Aug. 10.

“Our shared task is to make gas stations in Kyiv Oblast safer for employees and customers, given the challenges posed by the war,” Tkachenko said.

Participants outlined next steps, including automated alert systems and response protocols for gas station staff during air raid alerts, he said.

The meeting also addressed abandoned vehicles at gas stations that block evacuation routes, obstruct access to fire hydrants and impede emergency vehicles. Specific measures will be considered at the next meeting of the Kyiv Oblast Defense Council.

Tkachenko also raised the issue of shelters for gas stations located far from existing protective facilities, saying authorities plan to step up efforts in this area.

Gas stations across Ukraine became repeated targets of Russian attacks and disinformation campaigns in late July and early August. On Aug. 4, Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation debunked an AI-generated video circulated by Russian propaganda outlets that falsely claimed a gas station had been destroyed in Kremenchuk, Poltava Oblast.

On Aug. 3, Russian forces struck a gas station in the Shyroke community of Kryvyi Rih district, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, killing three people and injuring six others.

It was also reported on Aug. 3 that Russian attacks had destroyed 37 gas stations in the Naftogaz Group network since the start of 2026.
