Schools in Zhytomyr shift to online classes due to landfill fire

Firefighting efforts at the landfill are still underway, with more than 30 rescuers and nine pieces of equipment involved, according to reports.

Suspilne reported that thick smoke was visible in parts of Zhytomyr, and a strong odor was in the air.

The city hall announced that schools have switched to distance learning, and all outdoor competitions and training sessions have been canceled.

Specialists from the Zhytomyr Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention, along with the City Council’s Department of Ecology, are monitoring air quality to assess pollution levels, the city hall added.
