Hackers paralyze Russia’s Orion Telecom, disrupt uranium city’s network

The attack, timed for Russia’s national holiday, disrupted Orion Telecom’s networks, used by Russian security forces in aggression against Ukraine, disabling 370 servers, about 500 network switches, and wiping backups. This will not allow the provider to resume operations quickly, the sources said.

A closed uranium-mining city, reliant solely on Orion Telecom, lost all internet access. 

Residents in Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Bratsk, and Abakan flooded local social media with complaints about internet and TV outages, with one user venting, “What f***ing Russia Day? When will the internet be back?”. 

Ukrainian hackers from BO Team sent Orion Telecom a mocking message: “Happy holiday, undear Russians, soon you’ll live in the Stone Age, and we’ll help. Glory to Ukraine.” 

Orion Telecom confirmed a powerful DDoS attack caused the issues, promising restoration by the end of the day.
