Latvia’s State Police concluded that two drones struck an
oil depot in the city of Rezekne on
May 7, Baltic news site Delfi reported on May 8.
Police said in a statement to the media that investigators reached the conclusion based on initial on-scene procedures and a preliminary inspection of drone wreckage.
The State Police opened a criminal investigation under Article 10 of Latvia’s Criminal Code, which covers crimes against the state, and forwarded the case to the State Security Service for further investigation.
Latvia declared an air-raid alert on May 7 after drones entered its airspace from Russia. The unmanned aircraft later fell; one was reported to have crashed near the Rezekne oil depot, about 40 kilometers from the Russian border.
Following the incident, Latvia’s Foreign Ministry summoned
Russia’s chargé d’affaires and handed a note of protest.
