Lithuania’s Defense Ministry is set to upgrade and fortify a second strategic route across the Suwalki Gap, a key border stretch with Poland seen as a potential flashpoint for Russian aggression against the EU and NATO.

Deputy Defense Minister Tomas Godliauskas told Politico on April 18 that the gap—a roughly 100-kilometer-wide strip between Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave and Belarus that links Lithuania to Poland and other NATO countries—is vital to the country’s security.

The area has long been a security concern. In 2019, Lithuania and Poland agreed to strengthen its defenses. Two main roads cross the gap: the Kaunas-Warsaw route, which is part of the military artery Via Baltica, and the Vilnius-Augustavas highway. Lithuania plans to modernize the latter to meet dual-use standards for both civilian and military purposes, Godliauskas said.

“These roads are critically important for our security and defense,” he said.

“They have always been part of our civil-military planning as key ground routes to support our allies during a crisis.”

Together with Poland, Lithuania is also working to reinforce defensive positions along its borders with Kaliningrad Oblast and Belarus. In addition to these infrastructure upgrades, officials are addressing electronic security challenges. They are examining methods to counter Russian GPS jamming and spoofing, which have already disrupted civilian aviation and shipping in the region.

Politico noted that in the event of an invasion into NATO territory, Russia would likely target the Suwalki Gap to sever the Baltic nations from the bulk of the alliance.
