Russia’s fourth-largest oil refinery, Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez, has shut down its main crude oil distillation unit (CDU) after a Ukrainian drone attack on May 20, Reuters, citing two industry sources, reported on May 21.

Lukoil refinery is Russia's second-largest gasoline producer, capable of processing 16 million metric tons of oil per year, equivalent to roughly 320,000 barrels per day.

CDU-6 shutdown will lead to a sharp decline in the refinery's output, adding further uncertainty to ‌Russia's energy sector and fuel supply, Reuters reported.

The unit was able to process 25,700 metric tons per day, equivalent to approximately 190,000 barrels, and constituted 53% of the refinery's total capacity, according to the publication.

Virtually all major refineries in central Russia have been forced to halt or scale back output after Ukrainian drone attacks in recent days, Reuters added.

Lukoil refinery is located near the city of Kstovo in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. Ukraine’s general staff confirmed the strikes on the plant, which caused damage to the CDU-6 and ignited a fire.

This was the second drone attack on Kstovo in the past week, following the May 18 strikes.

The General Staff later confirmed the strikes on the Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez oil refinery.
