Macron may visit Ukraine after EU decides on Kyiv’s membership candidate status

French President Emmanuel Macron may visit Kyiv after the European Union takes a decision on whether to grant EU candidate status to Ukraine, U.S. cable television news network CNN reported, citing an unnamed source at the Elysee Palace.

A source told reporters on June 10 that Paris is waiting for the decision from the European Commission on Ukraine's application, and the timing of Macron's possible visit to Ukraine will be determined "based on these parameters."

This would be the first visit of the President of France to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion.

French daily newspaper Le Parisien, citing the Elysee Palace, writes that the possibility of a visit is currently being considered, but the probable date has not yet been determined.

The Macron administration has announced that he will visit Romania and Moldova next week to express France's solidarity with its European allies.

Earlier, the Europe 1 radio station reported that the French president was considering making a visit to Ukraine, where he could announce additional supplies of CAESAR self-propelled howitzers.

According to Bloomberg sources, the European Commission will recommend that EU leaders grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership on June 17.

A final decision is expected at the bloc’s summit in Brussels on June 23-24.
