Emmanuel Macron has called on both Russia and the United States to take responsibility in the context of stalled negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. Speaking about the second round of potential peace talks, Macron said that if Russia confirms its unwillingness to negotiate, Washington must reaffirm its commitment to sanctions. “This is a test of confidence for the Americans,” he added.
Macron revealed he spoke with Donald Trump 48 hours earlier, who expressed "impatience" with the ongoing conflict. “The question now is: what do we do about it? We [Europeans] are ready,” Macron said, reaffirming Europe’s consistent position in favor of international cooperation and rule-based order.
The statement comes amid reports from Politico and The Wall Street Journal suggesting that Trump is growing frustrated with Putin’s actions, with new U.S. sanctions against Russia possibly under consideration.
On May 27, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jalina Porter reiterated that Washington supports direct talks between Ukraine and Russia, emphasizing that “there is no military solution to the conflict.”
