Marta Kostyuk begins US Open 2024 with confident win — Video

Ukraine’s top tennis player Marta Kostyuk opened her 2024 US Open campaign with a straight-sets victory over American McCartney Kessler in the first round.

Kostyuk won the first set 6-2, making two breaks. At the start of the second set, Marta lost her serve for the first time but then won four consecutive games from 2-3 down, securing the set 6-3.

This is the third time Kostyuk has advanced past the first round at the US Open. Her best result in New York remains reaching the third round in 2020.

In the next round, Marta will face Britain’s Harriet Dart, who is ranked 78th in the world.

McCartney Kessler (USA) vs. Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine) — 2-6, 3-6

Kostyuk is the third Ukrainian to reach the second round of the 2024 US Open, following Elina Svitolina and Angelina Kalinina. Meanwhile, Dayana Yastremska, Lesia Tsurenko, and Yuliia Starodubtseva have been eliminated from the tournament.

Another Ukrainian, Kateryna Baindl, will play in the first round against Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
