The Russian strike on Odesa is a reminder of how Ukraine still needs air defense systems, said U.S. State Department representative Matthew Miller following the incident during the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The USA is in constant contact with both Ukraine and Greece, he reiterated.

"I think the strike is yet another reminder of how Russia continues to strike Ukraine every single day, and it’s a reminder of Ukraine’s need for air defense interceptors," Miller said.

“It’s a reminder that the United States Congress needs to take action, as we have called on them to do, to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.”

The ballistic missile strike on Odesa occurred at around 10:45 a.m. on March 6, killing five people, and was aimed at port infrastructure, Ukrainian Navy spokesman, Dmytro Pletenchuk reported.

The Russian military launched a missile attack on Odesa during the Greek PM’s visit, The Greek newspaper Protothema wrote.

Zelenskyy's motorcade was the target of the attack.

The President’s motorcade was 150 meters away from the Greek delegation led by Prime Minister Mitsotakis when a Russian missile struck at 11:43 am.

The Ukrainian military has no evidence to suggest that Russian forces were trying to hit President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s motorcade in their March 6 missile attack on Odesa, Ukraine’s Operational Command South spokesperson Natalia Humeniuk said.

Zelenskyy confirmed that he witnessed a morning Russian missile attack on Odesa, speaking at a joint press conference with Mitsotakis on March 6.

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov had a telephone conversation with Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, the Greek official reported on X on March 6.
