Meloni made the announcement at a press conference following the G7 summit.
The Italian Prime Minister noted that the European negotiator should come from a “medium-sized country”, rather than one of the EU’s largest member states.
She also noted that G7 leaders found common ground with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine at the summit, but cautioned that this mutual understanding “cannot always be taken for granted”.
Meloni said she will formally present her nominee at the summit in Brussels.

The EU summit in Brussels is scheduled to take place on June 18-19, with the war in Ukraine as the main topic. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who arrived in Brussels on June 17, is slated to address the European leaders.
En route to Brussels, the Ukrainian President spoke with Finnish President Alexander Stubb to discuss the outcomes of the G7 summit. Zelenskyy emphasized that Europe must be broadly represented in peace negotiations with Moscow, adding that Ukraine will attempt to implement “some new ideas” to end the war.
Ukrainian President attended the June 15-17 G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France. On the sidelines, Zelenskyy held several meetings with international partners, including his first face-to-face talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in months.
