The MEPs wrote a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath, urging the officials to take “concrete steps” because of threats to free elections in Hungary, the report said.
In the letter, the lawmakers said they have “serious doubts” that Hungary’s parliamentary vote can take place in a fair electoral environment. They asked the commission to assess whether state power is being abused, whether there is foreign interference, and whether journalists are being intimidated in ways that could undermine free elections.
“In backing their call for action, they emphasize ‘a
potential Russian interference operation in Hungary’ as a covert support of the
electoral campaign of the ruling Fidesz party, citing investigative reporting
about an operation on behalf of Russia’s military intelligence service,” Euronews
