Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi said he will support a potential unification with Romania and called for an open public debate on the issue, in an interview with Romanian radio station Vocea Basarabiei on May 30.

Popșoi stated that the topic of unification should be discussed openly, as it is regularly raised during meetings with citizens.

“This subject should no longer be taboo,” the Moldovan foreign minister added.

He added that if there is significant public support, the issue of unification could be revisited in greater detail in the near or distant future.

Popșoi noted that European integration remains Moldova's main strategic priority.

When asked about a possible referendum, the minister said that, as a Romanian citizen, he cannot vote “against” unification.

Romania and Moldova share close historical, cultural, and linguistic ties. However, the possibility of unification remains a topic of political debate and is not on the official agenda of the authorities in Chișinău.
