A monument to Ukrainian writer and poet Lesya Ukrainka was unveiled in the Hungarian city of Hódmezővásárhely, marking the 155th anniversary of her birth, Ukraine’s ambassador to Hungary Fedir Shandor said on public broadcaster Suspilne on Feb. 25.

According to him, it is a joint initiative of the embassy and Hódmezővásárhely Mayor Péter Márki-Zay. The monument was unveiled in a new square.

“Ms. Ariadna, a direct relative of Lesya Ukrainka, attended the opening. She does not speak a single word of Ukrainian and communicates in Hungarian,” the ambassador said.

Shandor added that the monument was made in Ukraine.

“Hódmezővásárhely is located in southern Hungary, near the border with Serbia. We decided that in every region where Ukrainians live, there should be a place for the local community to gather,” he added.
