Substation fire plunges Moscow districts into darkness amid frigid temperatures

A substation caught fire on Vysokovoltny Passage in Moscow, Russia, on the morning of Jan.
4, a statement from Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry.
The incident left over 20 high-rises in three Moscow districts without electricity and heating at -24°C, according to pro-Russian Telegram channels Baza and Mash. The temperature dropped to -27 degrees overnight.
Consumers were switched to a backup power supply, the Emergency Situations Ministry said, with no reported casualties. The cause of the fire is undisclosed.
Last year, the Russian capital faced multiple drone attacks. On Dec. 30, 2023, media reported Ukrainian forces striking military facilities with drones in several Russian oblasts, including Moscow, where explosions were heard.
