Along with the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO), NABU said they were conducting a special operation to expose a criminal organization allegedly led by an official from the Prosecutor General’s Office. NABU and SAPO said the organization may have been involved in providing protection to a network of scam call centers and money laundering infrastructure.
Ukrainska Pravda also filmed NABU employees climbing over a fence into the Prosecutor General’s Office building using ladders.
The Prosecutor General’s Office later responded to reports that one of its employees may have been involved in illegal activity connected to scam call centers. The office said it would fully cooperate with anti-corruption authorities and provide all necessary information within the law. It added that the case must receive an objective legal assessment through the established legal process.
The office also said the employee in question would be suspended from his duties for the duration of the pretrial investigation.
On Sept. 2, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had
submitted two bills to the Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada). The bills
would increase penalties for ruining scam call centers and harden the digital
banking system against illicit transactions.
