Russia launched 13 drone and missile attacks against Naftogaz Group infrastructure across multiple Ukrainian oblasts over the past week, damaging equipment and temporarily halting operations at several gas production assets, the company reported on Aug. 17.

"Thirteen attacks on Naftogaz Group facilities over the past week. Russia struck assets across various oblasts using drones and missiles. One facility was hit several times within a single week," the company stated.

According to Naftogaz, Russian strikes specifically targeted upstream gas extraction infrastructure. The bombardments caused severe damage to industrial equipment and production capabilities, forcing several facilities offline and resulting in partial losses of gas extraction volumes.

No Naftogaz employees were injured in the attacks.

Since the start of 2026, Russia has attacked Naftogaz Group facilities a total of 293 times.

Leadership maneuvers

Earlier reports indicated that former Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko could be appointed head of Naftogaz of Ukraine ahead of spring 2027, when the company's supervisory board is scheduled to conduct a formal competitive selection process for the board chairman position, Ekonomichna Pravda reported, citing internal sources.

According to the outlet, the supervisory board initially plans to appoint Svyrydenko as a board member before designating her acting CEO — a procedural sequence previously used to appoint Nataliya Boyko as head of the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU).

However, media reports noted that the appointment of former Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko remains unresolved, as the decision rests exclusively within the authority of the state company's supervisory board.

Members of the Naftogaz supervisory board later stated that Svyrydenko's candidacy for the CEO position "came as a surprise."
