“We must support the Ukrainian initiative...; it ensures a process that can lead to lasting peace,” said Stoltenberg.
“Of course, the Ukrainians, as the main victims of the full-scale invasion, must ultimately decide which terms are acceptable.”
The official made these comments after Turkey signaled support for the "Friends of Peace" initiative launched by China and Brazil.
Stoltenberg will leave his position as NATO Secretary General on Oct. 1, to be succeeded by former Dutch PM Mark Rutte. After his departure from NATO, Stoltenberg will head the Munich Security Conference.
On Sept. 27, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced China's intent, along with Brazil and other countries, to create the "Friends of Peace" platform to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war. Fifteen countries have joined the initiative, including Turkey, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Zambia, and Kenya.
Brazil and China call for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, involving both nations, stating that such negotiations are the "only way to resolve the 'Ukrainian crisis'."
The document emphasizes that both countries support an international peace conference "to be held at an appropriate time, recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, with equal participation from all sides and a fair discussion of all peace plans."
