“As the first NATO Ally, the Netherlands will deliver a EUR500 million package of U.S. weapon systems (incl. Patriot parts and missiles),” Brekelmans wrote in a Twitter post.
“This helps Ukraine to defend itself and the rest of Europe against Russian aggression.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the Dutch government for the assistance.
“Ukraine—and all of Europe—will receive greater protection against Russian terror,” Zelenskyy said in a Telegram post.
“I am sincerely grateful to the Netherlands for its significant contribution to bolstering our air shield.”
Earlier, Euractiv reported that several European countries were seeking written U.S. guarantees for the rapid delivery of new Patriot batteries to replace those being provided to Ukraine.
Ukraine currently operates six Patriot systems supplied by the United States, Germany, Romania, and the Netherlands. Zelenskyy said Kyiv is counting on 10 additional Patriot batteries.
On July 14, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new arms supply agreement between the U.S. and NATO. Under the deal, the U.S. would produce “the best weapons in the world,” sell them to NATO, and the alliance would coordinate their delivery to Ukraine.
