North Korean troops serving under Russian military command are not currently involved in combat operations against Ukrainian forces, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR) told LIGA.net on July 1.

“At present, there have been no recorded incidents of direct participation by units of the Korean People’s Army in operations against our Defense Forces,” the statement said. Ukrainian officials added that North Korean personnel are stationed well behind the front line, likely at training grounds and field bases in Russia’s Kursk Oblast.

On April 26, Russia’s General Staff head Valery Gerasimov acknowledged for the first time the participation of North Korean troops in the war against Ukraine, saying they were involved in pushing Ukrainian forces out of Kursk Oblast.

The following day, North Korea confirmed that it had sent troops on the “orders” of Kim Jong Un to support Russia in its war against Ukraine.

On June 26, Reuters, citing South Korea’s National Intelligence Service, reported that North Korea could send additional troops to Russia in July or August to further increase pressure on Ukraine.
