One source told the journalists that the sanctions might be related to treason charges.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in his evening address, confirmed the NSDC meeting and stated, "A decision has been made; it will be published tomorrow."
“We are protecting our state and restoring justice,” said Zelenskyy.
“Everyone who undermined Ukraine's national security and assisted Russia will be held accountable. Billions earned from effectively selling out Ukraine, its interests, and security must be blocked and used to defend Ukraine and its citizens.”
Shortly afterwards, Poroshenko issued a statement, seemingly confirming that the NSDC decision targeted him with personal sanctions. The former president stated that this was “not a surprise” to him, adding that he “hoped until the last moment that common sense would prevail.” He accused Zelenskyy and his officials of using state institutions to pressure their political opponents.
“I will not give up fighting for a European, democratic Ukraine,” said Poroshenko.
“Our team will not give up, no one and nothing will force us to change my stance. This [NSDC decision] is revenge for us being the only ones not afraid to speak truth to power and call things by their names.”
Previously, Zelenskyy’s ruling party sidelined Poroshenko from his parliamentary work and repeatedly denied him permission to travel abroad for various international events, including the upcoming Munich Security Conference.
