Since February 2022, at least 66,000 Russian soldiers have died
in the war against Ukraine, independent Russian outlet Mediazona and BBC
Russian Service reported on Aug. 30, citing data from open sources.
The journalists from both outlets maintain a name-by-name list of Russian casualties and were able to confirm the deaths of 66,471 soldiers. However, the report emphasizes that the actual number of casualties may be significantly higher.
The publications found that at least Russian 12,813 prisoners recruited from penal colonies, 12,566 volunteers, and 8,610 mobilized soldiers have died in the war.
Additionally, journalists report the deaths of at least 172 conscripts, although this figure does not include potential conscript casualties during Ukraine’s operation in Kursk Oblast.
