Pentagon responds to Ukraine's request to help shoot down Russian missiles

Pentagon Deputy Spokesperson Sabrina Singh stated that Ukraine is successfully using air defense systems provided by the U.S. to defend its territory, following President Biden's directive to supply Ukraine with necessary battlefield support.

When asked about comparisons between NATO actions in Ukraine and Israel, Singh emphasized that the two situations involve "very different landscapes and battlefields." She also noted that shooting down targets from Polish or Romanian territory would involve the U.S. in the war "in a different way," adding that the U.S. will continue supporting Ukraine without direct involvement.

This statement follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's request for neighboring NATO countries to assist in shooting down Russian drones and missiles, similar to Israel's defense strategies, though partners are not yet ready for this approach.

In August, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski suggested Poland should intercept Russian missiles over Ukraine, which was later clarified as a personal opinion by a spokesperson for the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Romania was also asked by Ukraine to shoot down Shahed drones heading towards the border, though there has been no official commitment to doing so.
