When asked whether Moscow intends to provide Tehran with any help, Peskov replied: “There have been no requests from the Iranian side.”
He added that Russia’s position on Iran is “well known to everyone” and “there are no changes in it.”
On March 1, the Kremlin website reported that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin expressed condolences to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian over the death of the country’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Putin described Khamenei’s elimination as a “cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law.”
In its Feb. 28 report the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) stated that Russia’s response to the strikes on Iran underscores Moscow’s limited ability to support Tehran and the asymmetry in Russian-Iranian relations.
In its March 1 report, ISW said Russia continues to demonstrate unwillingness to actively support Iran beyond standard statements following the death of Ali Khamenei and several other high-ranking officials of that country. Analysts noted that while criticizing Khamenei’s killing, Putin did not directly mention either the United States or Israel.
On Feb. 28, after the start of U.S. and Israeli operations against Iran and the killing of senior Iranian officials, Tehran launched missiles and drones at Israel and later at countries in the Persian Gulf: multiple explosions were reported in Dubai, Abu Dhabi (UAE) and Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). Iran also attacked U.S. military bases in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and elsewhere.
The UAE reported an Iranian attack involving hundreds of missiles and drones, with damage to airports, ports, U.S. consulates and civilian facilities, as well as large-scale fires at UAE oil facilities.
On March 5, missiles and drones flying from Iran fell on the grounds of an airport in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan city.
