A platoon commander in Zhytomyr Oblast was served an indictment for beating an enlisted soldier at a training center, the State Bureau of Investigation reported on March 16.

The notice is for ‘abuse of power committed under martial law’ under Part 5 of Article 426-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Pretrial measures of restraint are still under consideration.

Procedural supervision is provided by the Zhytomyr Specialized Military and Defense Prosecutor's Office.

The commander was dismissed from his position during the investigation. He may face up to 12 years in prison.

Earlier, a video was published online showing an officer kicking a conscripted soldier in a barracks, with the video text explaining that it was the commander of a training center.

Lieutenant Viktor Vitusevych later recorded a video apology, alluding to “punishing” the soldier for drinking alcohol.

The injured soldier also recorded a video message saying that the commander did not beat him, but "showed him some fighting moves."
