Starting Sept. 1, Piotr Łukasiewicz will begin his duties as Poland’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Polish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Paweł Wroński announced on Aug. 24.

As reported by Polish broadcaster FRM24, Wroński also noted that several new Polish ambassadors have started their duties in various countries over the past few days. For instance, Jan Tombiński, former EU ambassador to Ukraine (2012-2016), has become the new Polish ambassador to Germany.

Łukasiewicz is a political scientist, diplomat, and a colonel in the reserves of the Polish Armed Forces. From 2012 to 2014, he served as Poland's ambassador to Afghanistan.

From 1995 to 2006, Łukasiewicz focused on national security and counter-terrorism issues and participated in missions in Iraq (2004-2005).

In October 2009, he was appointed as the military attaché in Afghanistan. In this role, he contributed to the development of Poland's military strategy in Afghanistan during NATO’s presence in the country.

In 2012, Łukasiewicz retired with the rank of colonel and subsequently became the ambassador to Afghanistan. He concluded his service in the post on Dec. 31, 2014.
