Recruitment for the Ukrainian Legion began in Poland in October, with a total of 196 people having applied by Oct. 4, according to Polish Deputy Defense Minister Pawel Zalewski.

A major recruitment drive is underway in Lublin, open to all Ukrainian citizens. Nearly 200 people from various European countries have submitted applications so far.

“Once the first group of several hundred volunteers is formed, we will immediately start their training,” Polish outlet I.Pl quoted Zalewski.

He noted that Poland has already trained over 20,000 Ukrainian troops under the EUMAM program. He added that there is interest in joining the legion not only in Poland but also in other European countries.

“We see significant interest in this initiative among our citizens; the exact numbers are available to the [Polish] Ministry of Defense, but I can say that as of Friday, Oct. 4, 196 people from across Europe have applied,” Consul General of Ukraine in Lublin Oleh Kuts said.
