Polish parliament rejects Nawrocki’s Ukrainian refugees bill

Earlier, Nawrocki had vetoed government-sponsored legislation on the matter and submitted his own, but lawmakers deemed it duplicative and voted 244–0 to dismiss it. On Sept. 13, the Polish parliament extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2026, but tightened the rules for foreigners’ access to benefits, including the so-called “800+” child allowance, now limited to those with jobs.

On Aug. 25, Nawrocki vetoed the Sejm-approved amendments to the special law governing Ukrainian refugee status, which would have extended the protected status of Ukrainian nationals with no change in eligibility for social benefits.

His subsequent counterproposal limited childcare support payments to Ukrainian parents who were employed in Poland, rather than granted universally.
