The ceremony will draw world leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who plans to attend with First Lady Olena Zelenska, according to news agency Interfax-Ukraine.
U.S. President Donald Trump earlier also confirmed his attendance with his wife, Melania.
The death of Pope Francis
Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, at the age of 88 in his residence at the Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican.
Francis had recently been treated for bilateral pneumonia and was hospitalized earlier this year. On March 3, the Holy See’s press office said the pope had experienced two episodes of acute respiratory failure while in the hospital.
He was discharged on March 23, and on April 10, the pontiff made an unannounced visit to St. Peter’s Basilica. A video shared online showed the head of the Catholic Church arriving in a wheelchair.
On April 20, Francis delivered the traditional Easter blessing. Prior to his appearance on Easter Sunday, the Pope held a brief private meeting with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.
“Brothers and sisters, happy Easter!” he said, with a voice reportedly stronger than in recent weeks, according to The Guardian.
Assistants read the rest of the traditional Urbi et Orbi message on his behalf.
The Pope will be buried in Rome's Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica. He will be the first pope in more than a century to be buried outside the Vatican.
According to the press service of the Holy See, the cause of the pontiff's death was a cerebral stroke, irreversible cardiovascular collapse, and coma. The exact time of death was 7:35 a.m. on April 21.
