According to the Russian leader's aide, the call lasted nearly 90 minutes. Putin congratulated Trump on the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence and, Ushakov said, referred to Russia's "contribution to the founding of the American state."
The two leaders also discussed the war in Ukraine. According to Ushakov, Trump reaffirmed his readiness to help bring an end to the fighting and support efforts to achieve peace.
Ushakov said Putin also presented Russia's assessment of the battlefield and claimed Russian forces were continuing to advance.
Earlier, Russian media noted that the Kremlin this year published the full text of Putin's Independence Day greeting to Trump for the first time. The message focused largely on what Putin described as the future of U.S.-Russia relations.
On July 4, Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Ravid, Zelenskyy congratulated Trump on the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
Zelenskyy later confirmed the call in a Telegram post.
"We are grateful to the United States for all the assistance it has provided, from Javelins and Patriots to political support, and we deeply appreciate that America stands with us in defending our independence. I am grateful to every American who cares about the future of Ukraine, Europe and all people around the world for whom freedom matters," Zelenskyy wrote.
The Ukrainian president said he and Trump discussed the situation on the battlefield and diplomatic efforts. Zelenskyy said there is now a real opportunity to end the war and that "America's determination will be decisive." He added that the two leaders agreed to continue their discussions in person during the NATO summit in Ankara.
