Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping convene at Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Astana

Both leaders appeared completely satisfied with Sino-Russian relations and their efforts to establish a fair multipolar world order, which they claim is aimed at countering Western dominance.

Russian-Chinese relations are experiencing their “best period” in history," Russian dictator claimed, again reaffirming Russian relationship with China.

“Russian-Chinese relations, our comprehensive partnership, and strategic cooperation are at their best period in history.” 

Xi referred to Putin as his "old friend" and stated that China-Russia relations are at a "high level" in his opening remark.

"In the face of the turbulent international situation and external environment, the two sides should continue to uphold the original aspiration of friendship for generations to come," the Chinese leader added.

The SCO, established in 2001 by China and Russia, focuses on addressing security issues in Central Asia and the broader region. 

Other members include Iran, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Observer countries and dialogue partners include Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.

Putin and Xi have already met this year in the Russian dictator’s official visit to China on May 16-17.

They  planned informal talks to discuss issues related to Ukraine, Asia, energy, and trade, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yurii Ushakov said at that time.

Xi expressed support for the idea of a "political resolution to the Ukrainian crisis" after that meeting.
