During a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin agreed to a 30-day pause in attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the White House said on March 18.

“The leaders agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire, and permanent peace,” the statement said.

“These negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East.”

Notably, this alleged agreement to curb hostilities mirrors Ukraine’s proposal for a partial ceasefire, made during bilateral U.S.-Ukraine talks in Saudi Arabia on March 11.

Russian propaganda agency TASS reported that Putin supported “Trump’s initiative” for a pause on strikes on energy infrastructure, claiming that the dictator has “given the military the corresponding orders.”

A White House official earlier said the call lasted more than 90 minutes. CNN, citing a Russian source familiar with the conversation, reported that the call “went very well.”
