Putin made the remarks during a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Sept. 1, attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.
The meeting came two days after U.S. President Donald Trump, who had warned Moscow and Beijing against arming Tehran, threatened to resume strikes against Iran following the first exchange of fire in several weeks.
Pezeshkian said that if the United States resumed honoring its commitments under the memorandum of understanding Trump signed in Versailles on June 17, Tehran would “immediately act in the same way.”
He also warned that a return by the United States to a “policy of pressure and threats” could derail diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war.
During the meeting with Putin, Pezeshkian told him: “We value and thank you for your position at every stage.” He added: “This shows that our relations are strategic, not ordinary.”
Putin told Pezeshkian that Russia was “trying to provide you with the necessary assistance.”
“We admire your courage and resilience in the struggle for your national interests,” Putin said.
“Despite the military and political situation, we are
maintaining the momentum in our trade and economic relations that developed
last year.”
