Western powers need to limit Moscow’s ability to use advanced AI technologies, particularly ones that can be adapted for military purposes, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on June 27.

Speaking at the Fair Play Conference in Kyiv, Zelenskyy said Ukraine will nudge its international partners to prioritize emerging technologies, including AI, in terms of tighter sanctions against Russia.

“Now is the time to impose limits on transferring ready-made AI models with military capabilities to Russia,” he said.

Zelenskyy also proposed creating a new international platform to oversee the export of dual-use goods.

“This will help us not only shield ourselves directly from Russia but also indirectly from its allies, such as the regimes in Pyongyang and Tehran,” he added.

On June 18, Ukraine documented the first use of a Russian kamikaze drone equipped with a built-in camera, an AI module with machine vision, and a direct radio remote control system.
