Romania detains Russian saboteur targeting Antonov aircraft

Romania’s SRI intelligence service has foiled a Russian-coordinated sabotage operation and detained a Russian citizen who photographed strategic military facilities inside the country, Reuters reported on Sept. 8, citing a statement from the SRI.

The SRI said the Russian citizen, who lives in Romania, had been under surveillance since February as part of an investigation conducted with international partners.

The investigation also found that Russia continues to target vulnerable people for recruitment, the agency said.

The BBC reported on Sept. 4 that Russia may be using sabotage in Europe not only to disrupt weapons supplies to Ukraine but also to test NATO’s readiness to respond to such attacks. Moscow is probing the alliance’s weaknesses and may be preparing for a new phase of aggression in Europe.
