Construction work has begun in Romania on a new NATO base that will house 10 thousand NATO troops and their family members, reported Euronews on March 16.

According to the news channel, the cost of construction is estimated at €2.5 billion ($2.72 billion).

Project includes runways, weapons platforms, hangars for military aircraft, as well as schools, kindergartens, shops, and a hospital.

Currently, work has already begun on the basic infrastructure, including access roads and electricity.

It is noted that the base in Constanta County will be the largest in Europe.

In early March, Albania opened the rebuilt Soviet-era Kukova air base to service NATO aircraft.
