Romania summons Russian representative to protest Shahed drone wreckage falling on its territory

The Romanian Foreign Ministry issued a strong protest and condemnation of Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, demanding an immediate cessation. The ministry emphasized that attacks on civilian targets constitute war crimes and highlighted the irresponsible nature of military strikes near Romania's border, which jeopardizes national security. The ministry also underscored Russia's "sole responsibility" for the significant deterioration of security in the Black Sea region.

Russian Shahed drones on Romanian soil

Russia attacked Ukraine with 38 UAVs overnight on July 24. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that air defense systems shot down 25 of the drones. Three more UAVs were "locally lost" after crossing the border with Romania.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense said it had found the wreckage of a Russian drone near the village of Plauru in Tulcea County, where an air raid alert was previously declared. Experts conducted an investigation on the spot to find the wreckage of the drones.

Romania also declared an air raid alert on July 24 due to the Russian attack on Odesa Oblast. Residents of the territories bordering Ukraine heard explosions. Russia attacked the port infrastructure in the city of Izmail in Odesa Oblast at the time.

After the wreckage of Russian drones was found in Romania on July 25, NATO said it had no evidence of a "deliberate attack" on an ally.
