The Romanian parliament has approved opening a training
center in Romania for Ukrainian marines, Romanian news agency Agerpres reported
on Oct. 1.
Proposed by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, the initiative was supported by 233 MPs, with 18 voting against and 25 abstaining.
In a letter to the parliament, Iohannis said recent developments in the Russo-Ukrainian war show the need to expand the training of Ukrainian troops.
“An analysis revealed that Romania can contribute to the Marine Forces Coalition by establishing a marine training center on its national territory and supporting the training of Ukrainian marines within the available capacities,” the president said in the explanatory note.
Under the plan, the facility will operate for two years, with Romania retaining the right to terminate its commitment at any point during the training process or after the designated period ends.
