Russian ballistic missile attack hits Kyiv, leaves left bank without heating and water

The aggressor state attacked Ukraine with a Zircon missile, 18 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 339 drones, according to the Air Force.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia used a significant number of ballistic and cruise missiles overnight, along with more than 300 strike drones. The most difficult situation is in Kyiv.

According to the president, air defense forces “intercepted a significant number of targets.” “The day before this strike, we finally received the necessary missiles, which helped significantly,” he added.

In Kyiv, 335,000 people were left without power after the attack, 162,000 of whom have already been reconnected, according to Ukraine's largest private energy company DTEK. Emergency power cuts continue in the capital today.

As of 9:45 a.m. local time, Kyiv metro stations Hidropark and Dnipro are not operating; stations Darnytsia and Livoberezhna are open for entry and exit only.

Train movement on the red line:

• Between Akademmistechko and Arsenalna stations — intervals of 4 minutes 30 seconds;  
• Between Darnytsia and Arsenalna stations — 8–10 minutes.

Trains on the blue and green lines are operating in normal mode (intervals of 3–4 minutes).

The left bank of Kyiv mainly came under the Russian attack overnight, with damage recorded in three districts. Police showed photos of the attack fallout.

• In the Dniprovskyi district, the blast wave damaged an apartment building; a 59-year-old resident was injured. Debris damaged about 20 vehicles.
• In the Darnytskyi district, windows and a fence of a house were damaged.
• In the Desnianskyi district, UAV debris fell on cemetery grounds.

The Dniprovskyi district of Kyiv sustained damage and one injury was reported as a result of the overnight attack, according to Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko:

• One injured person is in hospital;  
• Non-residential premises damaged at several addresses;
• An elementary school building damaged by debris, no fire;
• Windows damaged in several residential buildings;
• UAV debris fell on open ground; cars were burning.

More than 5,600 apartment buildings in Kyiv are again without heating after the attack, and the left bank remains without water supply, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said.

“After this attack on the capital, 5,635 apartment buildings are without heat. Nearly 80% of them are buildings that had heating restored after the Jan. 9 strike,” Klitschko stated.

After the Jan. 9 strike, 6,000 buildings were left without heating; as of Jan. 19, 16 remained without heat.

“Utility and energy workers are working to restore heating, water and electricity to Kyiv residents’ homes,” the mayor added.

Explosions in the Ukrainian capital occurred around 2:00 a.m.

Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko later confirmed the strike on Kyiv.

“The Russians are attacking the capital. Please remain in shelters!” he wrote.
